The Paternal Ancestry of Elise Mauldin Paget, wife of James Manchester Paget and daughter of Benjamin Franklin Mauldin and Mary Eliza Daniel Reed ; [ca. 192u?]

Genealogical essay presumably written by Elise Mauldin Paget, including information re the Maldin family and the related Hamilton, Liddell, and Shanklin families of Pendleton District, S.C., a region later divided into several smaller units, one of which is now Anderson County. Pages 78-80 contain a biographical sketch of Benjamin Franklin Mauldin (1818-1886), the grandfather of the writer and include descriptions of his activities as first Superintendent of the Greenville Baptist Sunday School, Clerk of the Saluda Baptist Association, delegate to the Secession Convention, Tax Collector for the Confederate Government, and leading services for African-Americans at annual Association Meetings. Includes family stories and anecdotes, such as an occasion when services conducted at Shady Grove, S.C., by B.F. Mauldin in 1866 came to an abrupt end when the African American freedmen and women fled the church in a panic due to a rumor that Manse Jolly had been seen in the church yard. Also includes a photograph of BFM and one of his home in Calhoun (Anderson District, S.C.) built by J.P. Reed in 1842. Paget wrote this family history into a volume originally used to record financial records of Johnson Female University (Anderson, S.C.).
